REDDING, Shasta County — October 22, 2026. A power outage can disrupt communications, household cooling or heating and critical equipment. Redding Electric Utility (REU) operates an official outage map that identifies planned maintenance outages and unplanned interruptions. One detail matters: the map does not update automatically in a visitor’s browser.
Refresh before deciding an outage is over
REU says users must manually refresh their web browser for updates. If the map remains open on a phone or computer, its display may show older information until refreshed. A marker on a map is not necessarily a guaranteed restoration time or a statement about every individual service address.
Where to report a problem
REU lists 530-339-7200 for non-emergency electrical problems and outages. In its power outage instructions, the utility asks affected customers to check household breakers and whether neighbors also lack power. When reporting an outage, provide the address, nearest intersection, contact number and a description of the problem when it is safe to do so.
A fallen wire changes the response
Stay away from all fallen or damaged power lines. REU directs the public to call 911 for a downed line and to avoid approaching it or attempting any repair. Do not touch anything in contact with a fallen wire, and do not drive over it.
Scheduled does not mean accidental
REU’s map includes planned maintenance as well as unplanned outages. Check the label rather than assuming the outage reflects an equipment failure. Conversely, a failure at one house may not appear on a neighborhood-wide map.
Plan ahead
- Save the utility’s outage map and the 530-339-7200 reporting number.
- Keep a battery-powered source of light and phone charging.
- Make a plan for medicine that needs refrigeration or medical equipment that needs electricity.
- Follow official instructions for any emergency involving electricity, fire or downed lines.
