REDDING, Shasta County — October 26, 2026. The Redding Police Department has been awarded $355,000 in California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) funding to support traffic enforcement and safety programs, according to a city announcement issued October 12.
How the money will be used
Among the planned activities are funding for a dedicated full-time DUI officer, checkpoints and patrols focused on impaired driving, and operations targeting distracted drivers who violate California’s hands-free cellphone law. Redding Police also plans to address speeding, failure to yield, stop-sign and red-light violations, unsafe turns and behaviors that put pedestrians and cyclists at risk.
The department lists community presentations about traffic safety and training for officers in Standard Field Sobriety Testing, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement and Drug Recognition Expert procedures. Some efforts will involve neighboring agencies. The award period runs through September 2027.
What residents can and cannot infer
A grant for enforcement and education is not a report of a particular crash, the identification of a suspect or an immediate change in local speed limits. Police do not publish every checkpoint time or operating location in this funding summary. Any citations and criminal allegations arising from future enforcement must be assessed separately under applicable law.
The city attributes the program’s funding to OTS through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The release does not promise a specific percentage reduction in collisions or provide a new independent crash-rate calculation, so California58 does not invent one.
